Our Approach to Learning Mathematics

At RSS, we believe that learning Mathematics goes beyond mastering numbers and procedures. Guided by the MOE Primary Mathematics Framework, our Mathematics programme places problem solving at the heart of learning. Through thoughtfully designed lessons, students learn to think, reason, and communicate mathematically with confidence.

Age‑appropriate Educational Technology (EdTech) tools are used purposefully to support exploration, collaboration, and engagement. By connecting Mathematics learning to real‑life situations, we foster the joy of learning while nurturing critical, adaptive, and inventive thinking, information skills, curiosity, confidence, and resilience—emerging 21st Century Competencies (E21CC) and key dispositions that prepare our students for the future.

Building Strong Foundations: Factual Fluency (P1–P6)

Time is set aside during lessons for students to practise and recall basic numeracy facts. This helps them become more fluent and confident, allowing them to focus their thinking on understanding new concepts and solving problems effectively.

Making Mathematics Meaningful through Learning Experiences (P1–P6)

Teachers introduce new concepts through meaningful learning activities, starting with hands‑on use of manipulatives and gradually guiding students towards visual representations and mathematical symbols. This structured approach helps students make connections across different forms of representation, supporting deep understanding and building strong foundations in Mathematics.

Developing Confident Problem Solvers (P1–P6)

Problem-solving skills and mathematical heuristics are introduced progressively to help students build confidence and competence in tackling mathematical tasks. Guided by Polya’s problem‑solving process, students are supported to develop essential thinking routines such as planning, monitoring, and reflecting on their solutions.

Supporting Learners: Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) Programme (P1–P4)

The Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) programme provides early and targeted support for selected students who need additional help in foundational numeracy skills. Through small‑group, hands‑on activities, students build confidence and strengthen their understanding of basic Mathematics.

Stretching Potential: Enrichment Opportunities

Students with strong interest and aptitude in Mathematics are offered enrichment opportunities such as Mathematical Olympiad competitions and the E2K Mathematics Programme.

The E2K Mathematics Programme is offered to selected P4 and P5 students to deepen mathematical reasoning and understanding through inquiry‑based learning. Students work independently and collaboratively to develop positive learning habits and key competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication.

In addition, Mathematics Recess Activities provide informal and enjoyable opportunities for students to explore Mathematics beyond the classroom. Through games, puzzles, and hands‑on challenges, students apply mathematical thinking in a relaxed setting, fostering curiosity, perseverance, and the joy of learning. These activities encourage students to see Mathematics as fun, meaningful, and relevant in their everyday experiences.
